The film serves as an adaptation of the musical of the same name, which was based on the 1995 book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which took inspiration from L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The movie will follow the story of Elphaba Throbb, a green-skinned woman who eventually becomes known as The Wicket Witch of the West. Erivo is set to portray Throbb, and she will costar with Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda the Good. Also set to appear in the upcoming film are performers such as Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum and Ethan Slater. Development on the project commenced in the mid-2010s, and Erivo signed on to portray Elphaba in November of 2021. It was announced that Wicked would be split into two parts the following April, and production commenced that December. The actress spoke about working on the feature during an interview with Entertainment Weekly and opened up about putting her own touch on her character's song Defying Gravity.
